F.801 on a Viessmann One Base: Malfunction, refrigerant circuit reversal valve

Short answer

On a Viessmann heat pump, F.801 means: Malfunction, refrigerant circuit reversal valve. The manual does not say whether the heat pump stops. An engineer is needed to fix the cause.

What it means

The manual says: Malfunction, refrigerant circuit reversal valve.

Part involved: Malfunction, refrigerant circuit reversal valve.

When it shows: System characteristics: Fault, outdoor unit, no refrigerant circuit reversal.

Likely causes:

  • 4-way diverter valve faulty.
  • Refrigerant leak.
  • High pressure sensor faulty.

Is it safe?

Switch the heat pump off at its isolator and call an engineer.

Does the heat pump stop? Not stated
SeveritySafety lockout
Engineer needed?Yes

The manual does not say whether the heat pump stops.

Resetting itself: Not stated per code in Viessmann document 6199893 GB 01/2026 (VSA00009).

Manual reset: Measures include resetting/unlocking the refrigerant circuit via HMI service menu "Reset outdoor unit" or ViGuide (engineer, password-protected; 6199893 p.118).

What you can check

  • On the HMI, tap the message and "?" to read the system characteristics and Viessmann's user tips; note the code (e.g. F.xxx) and text for your contractor (operating instructions 6249162 p.57).
  • Acknowledge the message once via the HMI; do not acknowledge fault messages several times in quick succession (6249162 p.58) - notify your contractor.
  • If you smell gas/propane near the outdoor unit or suspect a refrigerant leak: switch the heat pump off at its isolator/consumer-unit breaker, keep ignition sources away from the outdoor unit and call a qualified engineer.

What the engineer will check

  • Check refrigerant used.
  • Check 4-way diverter valve:.
  • 230 V~ power supply at X1 on VCMU refrigerant circuit controller.
  • Voltage L1 at X3.1 for relay 2.
  • Voltage L1 at X3.2 with relay 2 switched. If required, replace VCMU refrigerant circuit controller.
  • Isolate the system from the power supply. Check resistor R on disconnected coil of 4-way diverter valve. If R > 300 kΩ, replace the 4-way ….
  • Remove and flush the 4-way diverter valve. Clean connecting lines. If required, replace the 4-way diverter valve.
  • Check high pressure sensor connecting lead, connections and plug-in connection X20.1 to X20.3 on EHCU electronics module. Replace high pressure sensor if required.

Who to ask for: Viessmann-trained heat pump engineer with F-gas certification and R290 (A3 flammable refrigerant) competence.

Certification: F-gas certificate (UK F-gas Regulations; EU 2015/2067 Cat. I cited by Viessmann) plus A3/R290 competence per EN 378-4 or IEC 60335-2-40 Annex HH (6202263 p.2).
