Is 'free solar' or rent-a-roof a good deal?
Short answer
Be careful. Many 2010 to 2016 'free' systems were roof leases lasting 20 to 25 years: the company kept the Feed-in Tariff and you got some free daytime electricity. Leases can complicate selling or remortgaging, because lenders must approve them under UK Finance rules. Any new 'free' or 'self-funding' offer deserves close scrutiny.
