A01 on a Toshiba heat pump: Flowing quantity failure

Short answer

On a Toshiba heat pump, A01 means: Flowing quantity failure. The heat pump keeps running with some functions stopped. An engineer is needed to fix the cause. The wording differs by model range — each is shown below.

What it means

On the R32 Estia 1-Series (split, Wall-Mounted and All-in-One)

The manual says: Flowing quantity failure.

Part involved: circulation pump, flow switch/sensor, strainer, water pipework.

When it shows: Detected by flow rate abnormality.

Likely causes:

  • Almost no or little water flow.
  • Not enough air vented.
  • Dirt clogging in water piping/strainer.
  • Water piping too long - buffer tank and secondary pump needed.

On the Estia (Series 4) Standard & Powerful

The manual says: Pump or flowing quantity error.

Part involved: circulation pump, flow switch/sensor, strainer, water pipework.

When it shows: (1) TC>=63C in heat pump heating/DHW; (2) no flow-switch signal 2 min after pump start; (3) flow-switch chattering; (4) flow switch shows flow when pump starts (connector off).

Likely causes:

  • Almost no or little water flow.
  • Not enough air vented.
  • Dirt in piping/strainer.
  • Water piping too long - buffer tank and secondary pump.
  • Flow switch connector disconnected or flow switch defect.

On the Estia 5 Series (Standard)

The manual says: Pump or flowing quantity error.

Part involved: circulation pump, flow switch/sensor, strainer, water pipework.

When it shows: (1) TC>=63C in heat pump heating/DHW; (2) no flow-switch signal 2 min after pump start; (3) flow-switch chattering; (4) flow switch shows flow when pump starts (connector off).

  • Not enough air vented.
  • Dirt in piping/strainer.
  • Water piping too long - buffer tank and secondary pump.
  • Flow switch connector disconnected or flow switch defect.

On the Estia 5 Series Powerful (Hi Power / Extreme)

The manual says: Pump or flowing quantity error.

Part involved: circulation pump, flow switch/sensor, strainer, water pipework.

When it shows: Trigger thresholds not printed in the IM; see SM.

Likely causes:

  • Almost no or little water flow.
  • Not enough air vented.
  • Dirt in piping/strainer.
  • Water piping too long - buffer tank and secondary pump.
  • Flow switch connector disconnected or flow switch defect.

Is it safe?

On the R32 Estia 1-Series (split, Wall-Mounted and All-in-One)

Does the heat pump stop?Partly
SeverityFault — needs a manual reset once the cause is fixed
Engineer needed?Yes

The heat pump keeps running with some functions stopped.

Resetting itself: no.

Manual reset: Cause must be fixed by an engineer; hardware faults reappear until repaired.

On the Estia (Series 4) Standard & Powerful

Does the heat pump stop?Yes
SeverityFault — needs a manual reset once the cause is fixed
Engineer needed?Yes

The heat pump stops until the fault clears or is reset.

Resetting itself: no.

Manual reset: Cause must be fixed by an engineer; hardware faults reappear until repaired.

On the Estia 5 Series (Standard)

What you can check

  • Note the check code shown on the remote controller and the outdoor/hydro model numbers before contacting an engineer.
  • Check the system pressure gauge on the hydro unit / heating system shows the normal fill pressure the installer set (the manuals ask for at least about 1 bar); if it is low, report it to the engineer. Check the filling loop is closed.
  • Check radiator/underfloor zone valves and thermostats are calling for heat and have not all been turned off.

What the engineer will check

On the R32 Estia 1-Series (split, Wall-Mounted and All-in-One)

  • Follow manufacturer's check-code flowchart.
  • Almost no or little water flow.
  • Not enough air vented.
  • Dirt clogging in water piping/strainer.
  • Water piping too long - buffer tank and secondary pump needed.

Who to ask for: Heat pump / heating engineer (hydronic).

Certification: Heat pump installer competence (e.g. MCS-installer staff); no F-gas needed unless refrigerant work follows.

On the Estia (Series 4) Standard & Powerful

  • Follow manufacturer's check-code flowchart.
  • Almost no or little water flow.
  • Not enough air vented.
  • Dirt in piping/strainer.
  • Water piping too long - buffer tank and secondary pump.
  • Flow switch connector disconnected or flow switch defect.
