How long do home batteries last?

Short answer

Most warranties promise a minimum share of the original capacity, not a like-new battery. Documents we read range from 60% (SigEnergy, Huawei, Enphase) through 70% (Fox, SolaX, GivEnergy, Pylontech) to 80% (Tesla, AlphaESS, Sunsynk, Anker), usually for 10 to 15 years, and often end sooner if a throughput or cycle limit is reached first.

What should I know before deciding?

Tesla Powerwall (EMEA Rev 1.15): 80% after 10 years, unlimited cycles for solar self-consumption, time-based control and backup; 37.8 MWh for other uses. SigenStor (Europe, 16 Apr 2025): battery and energy controller 10 years; 60% of usable energy for 10 years or 18.20 MWh (BAT 5.0) / 27.30 MWh (BAT 8.0), whichever comes first. The installer video quotes 'extendable to 15 years' - not in this revision. Fox ESS UK & Ireland V4.4 (11 Aug 2025): EQ and EVO modules 12 years, EP and CQ modules 10 years; 70% of nominal energy or a throughput cap (EVO10 47.88 MWh; EP11 38.85 MWh; CQ16 57.85 MWh). SolaX UK & Ireland V1.5 (21 Aug 2024): 70% of nominal energy for 120 months or throughput (e.g. T58 5.76 kWh: 17.9 MWh; TP-HS50E 5.1 kWh: 15.9 MWh); some HV S-series get a 12-year product warranty. GivEnergy (overview 13 Feb 2024): 12 years for battery, inverter and All-in-One; 70% of usable capacity; unlimited cycles for self-consumption or grid charging, 10 MWh per kWh fair use if third-party controlled or grid trading. GivEnergy Ltd has been in administration since 9 Apr 2026 and is not honouring warranties.

How much capacity will my battery lose each year?

Expect a gradual loss rather than a sudden failure. A multi-year study of 21 German home batteries found usable capacity fell by about two to three percentage points a year on average. Heat, long periods held at 100% and heavy cycling speed this up; LFP cells generally age more slowly than older NMC designs.

Figgener et al., Nature Energy 2024: 21 privately operated home systems in Germany, up to 8 years of data, ~2-3 percentage points of usable capacity lost per year on average. At that rate a battery would be around 70-80% after 10 years, which is why warranty floors sit at 60-80%. Apps often show 'capacity' or 'state of health' estimates that drift; a single low reading is not proof of fade - see SOC calibration.

How many cycles a day can my battery do before the warranty runs out, and what does each kWh of wear cost?

Warranties allow roughly one full cycle a day. Fox ESS EVO10 warrants 47.9 MWh over 12 years (about 1.07 cycles a day), and a SigenStor BAT 10.0 module 30.66 MWh over 10 years (about 0.96 cycles a day, EU terms of 27 May 2025). Powerwall 3 has no cycle limit for self-use and time-of-use shifting, but 37.8 MWh for other uses. Spread over that throughput, wear costs about 16–25p per kWh.

Wear cost/kWh ≈ installed price ÷ warranted lifetime throughput (a conservative proxy; batteries often outlast warranty). Powerwall 3 at £7,395 ÷ 37.8 MWh = 19.6p/kWh. DESNZ 11-29.99 kWh median £630 per nominal kWh ÷ (3,000-4,700 cycles × 85% average capacity) = 15.8-24.7p/kWh.
