Do home batteries work in the cold?
Short answer
Lithium cells must not be charged hard when cold, so the battery management system slows or blocks charging. Tesla's Powerwall 3 limits charging between 0 and 10 C and blocks it below 0 C unless heated; GivEnergy and SigEnergy block charging below about 0 C. Discharging still works, so the battery may empty but not refill overnight.

What should I know before deciding?
Charging a cold graphite anode risks lithium plating, a permanent capacity loss; BMSs therefore derate or stop charging near 0 C. Powerwall 3: normal above 10 C; charging limited 0-10 C; blocked below 0 C; Heat Mode warms cells with bonded heaters, predicting from 7 days of history; ~200 Wh at -20 C (secondary summary of Tesla white paper). AlphaESS: below 10 C cells 'begin to lose performance, and at 0 C charging often stops'; heated SMILE-G3 4.8/9.6 kWh modules introduced. SigenStor: below 0 C immediate charging not possible; built-in heating starts automatically (user manual extract). GivEnergy owners report slower charge when cells are cool; GivEnergy said higher rates apply above ~20 C (community forum).
Which batteries have heating for winter, and does it matter?
Heating matters when a battery sits in a cold garage or outside, because many LFP packs cannot charge near 0 °C. SigenStor, Huawei LUNA S1, Fox Evo, heated SolaX T58 V3 and Anker SOLIX X1 have built-in heating. Giv-Bat Gen 3 and Pylontech US5000 only charge from 0 °C, and Enphase 5P slows below 15 °C (checked 24 Sept 2026).
SigenStor manual: below 0 C charging is not possible immediately; built-in heater switches on automatically and best charging comes after up to 2 h heating, using stored energy. Huawei LUNA S1 manual: built-in thermal control heats the battery in cold environments, reducing efficiency. SolaX T-BAT H 5.8(H) V3: charging 0-55 C without heating, -30-55 C with heating.
Does my battery need heating or cooling, and what is the difference between systems?
Some batteries only protect themselves by slowing down; others heat or cool the cells. Powerwall 3 heats cells ahead of forecast cold, SigenStor heats from 0 C, some AlphaESS modules have heaters, and Fox relies on fans and reactive warm-up. If your battery lives somewhere cold, choose one with heating or keep it frost-free.
Types: none (derate only) / heating only / heating and cooling / active liquid loop (older Powerwall 2 used a coolant loop). Heating uses the battery's own energy: small (Tesla ~200 Wh/day at -20 C) but it can hold SOC above reserve in long cold outages. Cooling fans may run audibly in summer or during fast charging - normal unless new noises, smells or alarms appear.
What to do next
Check the manufacturer manual and warranty before changing settings. Use the installer or manufacturer support route for persistent faults.
