Does my battery need the internet?
Short answer
Yes for basic operation: schedules, self-use and backup run on the inverter. What stops without internet is app monitoring, remote changes, dynamic tariff dispatch, AI optimisation, VPP events and firmware updates. Some warranties also shrink if the system stays offline for long, so keep it connected where you can.

What should I know before deciding?
Warranty effects: AlphaESS 3 yr, Growatt 3 yr, SigEnergy 5 yr minimum, Tesla 4 yr, GivEnergy may revert to 12 months. Agile or Intelligent tariffs that set charge slots from the cloud need connectivity to follow price changes. MIS 3012 requires the installer to give you network credentials for internet-connected devices.
My battery app is down - is my battery still working?
Almost certainly. Batteries run their schedules locally, so an app, cloud or Wi-Fi outage stops you seeing or changing things, not the battery itself. Check the unit's display or lights and your meter. Things that need the cloud - dynamic tariff dispatch, AI optimisers, VPP events and remote firmware - pause until it reconnects.
Tesla: Powerwall keeps operating offline; local monitoring works when your phone is on the same network. GivEnergy: unpaid users keep local access over the home network; cloud premium is paid since May 2026. Long outages can affect warranties (see kb:batteries:maintenance:warranty-needs-internet).
Do I lose my battery warranty if it goes offline?
Often, partly. Most makers want the system online for monitoring and firmware updates. If it stays offline, AlphaESS and Growatt cut the warranty to three years, SigEnergy to five, Tesla to four, and GivEnergy's terms allowed a 12-month fallback. Huawei's 15-year LUNA S1 cover needs no gap longer than six months. The battery itself keeps working.
AlphaESS UK: 'For the Products not connected to the Internet, the Warranty Period is reduced to 3 years'; tell your installer about outages of 14 days or more. Growatt: warranty reduces to 3 years without monitoring on Growatt's platform. SigEnergy: notifies after a month offline; if disconnected for an extended period, 'we always provide a five-year warranty'.
What to do next
Check the manufacturer manual and warranty before changing settings. Use the installer or manufacturer support route for persistent faults.
