Which battery chemistry is best?

Short answer

For most homes, LFP (lithium iron phosphate). It dominates new UK home batteries, tolerates heat better, releases little oxygen in failure and is cheaper per kWh. NMC packs are more compact but run hotter in thermal runaway. Sodium-ion works in a wider temperature range and avoids lithium, but UK products are few and cost more per kWh.

What should I know before deciding?

BNEF (Dec 2025): average LFP pack $81/kWh vs NMC $128/kWh; stationary storage packs $70/kWh. Thermal runaway test (eTransportation 2023): NMC-811 module ran away at 371.6 C surface temperature vs 436.6 C for the first LFP cell; LFP's phosphate bonds limit oxygen release. LFP vent gas is still flammable; location and detection rules (PAS 63100) apply to all chemistries. Cycle warranties on LFP home batteries are typically 6,000-10,000 cycles (Enphase, EcoFlow, Anker 6,000; SigEnergy cell rating 10,000 to 60% SOH). Sodium-ion: Eleven Energy (UK) Galvani battery -20 to 55 C, 8,000-cycle guarantee, 10-year cover. Secondary sources put sodium at 2-3x LFP cost per stored kWh (2026).

Which home batteries have built-in fire protection?

Several newer batteries add internal fire suppression: SigenStor lists five safety layers including an aerosol extinguisher, SolaX T58 V3 and EcoFlow PowerOcean include aerosol modules, and Fox says its latest batteries trigger at about 170 °C. Powerwall 3 relies on passing UL 9540A. None replaces PAS 63100 location rules (checked 24 Sept 2026).

Which batteries have heating for winter, and does it matter?

Heating matters when a battery sits in a cold garage or outside, because many LFP packs cannot charge near 0 °C. SigenStor, Huawei LUNA S1, Fox Evo, heated SolaX T58 V3 and Anker SOLIX X1 have built-in heating. Giv-Bat Gen 3 and Pylontech US5000 only charge from 0 °C, and Enphase 5P slows below 15 °C (checked 24 Sept 2026).

SigenStor manual: below 0 C charging is not possible immediately; built-in heater switches on automatically and best charging comes after up to 2 h heating, using stored energy. Huawei LUNA S1 manual: built-in thermal control heats the battery in cold environments, reducing efficiency. SolaX T-BAT H 5.8(H) V3: charging 0-55 C without heating, -30-55 C with heating.

What to do next

Use your own half-hourly electricity data where possible. Compare usable kWh, kW, tariff rules and warranty terms before buying.
