Are cheap home batteries worth it?

Short answer

Often, but for the software and support more than the cells. Most home batteries now use similar LFP cells; the differences are the battery management system, how good the app and control are, how long firmware is maintained, warranty terms, and whether the maker will still exist in ten years. GivEnergy's 2026 administration shows the last point is real.

What should I know before deciding?

Compare: usable kWh, charge/discharge kW, warranty years and retained %, throughput limits, online requirements, backup type, heating, UK support entity. Check if the app can run locally without a subscription (GivEnergy cloud premium became paid in May 2026). Look for a UK office, UK-specific warranty document and G98/G99 listing. Premium brands can also fail or change terms; installer quality matters as much as brand.

What happens to my battery warranty if the manufacturer goes bust?

If the maker fails, its warranty usually goes with it. GivEnergy Ltd entered administration on 9 April 2026 and honours no hardware warranties, although its app continues under GivEnergy Software Ltd. Powervault had administrators appointed on 21 November 2025. Owners then rely on installers, insurance-backed guarantees or consumer law (checked 24 Sept 2026).

Does a home battery work without the internet?

Yes for basic operation: schedules, self-use and backup run on the inverter. What stops without internet is app monitoring, remote changes, dynamic tariff dispatch, AI optimisation, VPP events and firmware updates. Some warranties also shrink if the system stays offline for long, so keep it connected where you can.

Warranty effects: AlphaESS 3 yr, Growatt 3 yr, SigEnergy 5 yr minimum, Tesla 4 yr, GivEnergy may revert to 12 months. Agile or Intelligent tariffs that set charge slots from the cloud need connectivity to follow price changes. MIS 3012 requires the installer to give you network credentials for internet-connected devices.

Who updates my battery's firmware, and what can go wrong?

Most modern batteries are updated remotely by the manufacturer over the internet, sometimes without notice; SigEnergy's warranty says updates 'may briefly disrupt' operation. Updates can fix bugs and add features, but can also reset charge schedules, export limits or reserve settings, or break inverter-battery communication. Check your settings after any update.

SigEnergy warranty: by connecting you agree SigEnergy 'may update the firmware ... without further notice'. GivEnergy: updates run remotely from the portal (5-30 minutes) or locally by USB; do not switch off during an update; restart if it takes over an hour. Tesla pushes over-the-air updates; Powerwall 3 Heat Mode arrived with firmware 23.40+ (secondary source). After the 2025 Powerwall 2 recall most affected units were remotely discharged.

What to do next

Use your own half-hourly electricity data where possible. Compare usable kWh, kW, tariff rules and warranty terms before buying.
