Will my battery work in a power cut?

Short answer

Only if it was installed for backup. Grid-tied batteries must shut down when the grid fails unless an EPS or a backup gateway isolates the house. An EPS socket or backup circuit powers a few chosen loads, often limited to about 16 A; a whole-home gateway can run most of the house. Switchover can take milliseconds to several seconds.

What should I know before deciding?

No backup: battery and solar stop in a cut (anti-islanding under G98/G99). EPS: one outlet or a few circuits (myenergi libbi backup 16-20 A; GivEnergy 2023 guide ~5 s delay). Whole-home gateway: needs space near the meter, an earth electrode for island mode (MIS 3012), and the backup reserve set. Switchover: gateways claim 20 ms (GivEnergy) or 'fraction of a second' (Tesla); SigEnergy claims 0 ms with conditions; owners report device reboots on some systems. EV chargers, heat pumps and electric showers may be excluded or overload the inverter.

How much battery should I keep in reserve for power cuts, and why do things reboot when the power fails?

The reserve is the share of battery capacity the system will not use day to day so it is available in an outage. 20% of a 13.5 kWh battery is 2.7 kWh, a few hours of overnight load. Raise it before storms. Brief blackouts during switchover can reboot routers and computers; a small UPS avoids this.

Tesla: set a higher Backup Reserve if prone to cuts; Storm Watch pre-charges before severe weather; standby below 10%. EPS systems can take ~5 s (GivEnergy 2023 guide); gateways claim 20 ms (GivEnergy) or 'fraction of a second' (Tesla); owners report 0.5-3 s blackouts on some systems. Reserve reduces daily savings: each kWh held back is a kWh not used to avoid import.

Why did some of my devices reboot when my Tesla Powerwall switched to backup in a power cut?

Tesla says Powerwall disconnects from the grid 'within a few seconds' of a power cut and then restores backup power, so the home can see a brief interruption. Computers, routers and some clocks can drop out in gaps well under a second. Tesla does not publish a millisecond switchover figure for Backup Gateway 2 (checked September 2026).

Tesla UK power-cut page (2023 snapshot): 'disconnects within a few seconds from the grid and rapidly restores backup power to your home on one phase ... you won't even notice the cut in most cases'. Backup Gateway 2 detects outages and disconnects Powerwall 3 from the grid to prevent backfeed and provide quick backup power (UK datasheet 2026); no transfer time is stated. Sigenergy's own technical note cites ITIC: IT equipment rides through about 20 ms; it describes rival systems as taking up to about 3 s, which would restart loads (competitor claim, not verified).

What to do next

Use your own half-hourly electricity data where possible. Compare usable kWh, kW, tariff rules and warranty terms before buying.
